A new police chief, Todd Chamberlain, was recently sworn in in Aurora, Colorado, but the community is not satisfied with the lack of transparency and community involvement in the selection process. Chamberlain, a former Los Angeles Police Department commander, immediately engaged with protesters calling for justice in Kilyn Lewis’ death. The community questions why Chamberlain was chosen without their input and expresses a lack of trust in the leadership of the Aurora Police Department.
MiDian Shofner, CEO of Epitome of Black Excellence & Partnership, challenged Chamberlain on why he accepted the position without community involvement, highlighting the issues within the department and the ongoing concerns in the community. Chamberlain assured the community that he is there to serve them, but trust remains low.
The Aurora community has been advocating for transparency and accountability in the police department, especially following the controversial death of Kilyn Lewis, who was shot and killed during an arrest. Community members and advocates continue to demand answers and better treatment for Black and brown residents of Aurora.
Despite ongoing tensions and concerns within the community, both the city and the police have been facing backlash and criticism. The lack of trust, transparency, and community involvement in critical decisions has fueled the ongoing unrest in Aurora. The community remains vigilant in their pursuit of justice and accountability in the leadership of the Aurora Police Department.
