A male Bengal tiger escaped from the Quinta La Fauna zoo in Reynosa, Mexico near the Texas border, last week and is still on the loose. Efforts to neutralize the tiger have been unsuccessful, with the animal being spotted but not captured. The zoo has been closed since September 4, and it is unclear how the tiger managed to escape. Public security officials have warned the public not to approach or try to catch the tiger for their safety.
Reynosa Mayor Carlos Peña Ortiz is coordinating efforts to locate the tiger, with footprints and feces belonging to the animal being discovered. Attempts to shoot the tiger with a dart have been unsuccessful, and the animal has been seen hiding among trees. The tiger, possibly named Tony, has been responsible for killing hens and piglets in the area, leaving paw prints for crews to track.
Crews have set up trap cages, bait, and motion detection cameras in an effort to safely capture the tiger without causing harm. Residents are advised to call 911 if they spot the tiger and to avoid approaching it. The public is urged to stay safe and allow professionals to handle the situation.
