Victims’ Commissioner Helen Newlove claims that many survivors of crime are unaware of their perpetrators being freed despite requests for notification. The government is releasing 1,700 offenders early to address prison overcrowding, with some victims left unnotified about the release. Downing Street warns of “unchecked criminality” if early release does not occur.
The offenders are expected to be released starting from 8am across England and Wales. The scheme allows some to be released after serving only 40% of their sentence. Although serious offenders like those guilty of violent crimes, domestic abuse, and sexual offences are supposed to be exempt, campaigners argue the exemptions list is not comprehensive.
Probation officers have had limited time to prepare for the release of offenders, raising concerns about them finding housing and support. The prisons watchdog’s annual report found that many prisons are overcrowded, understaffed, and violence is a pressing concern in more than a third of institutions.
Survivors of domestic violence are particularly anxious about the releases, fearing for their safety and inadequate protection. The Centre for Women’s Justice warns of the risk posed by offenders who may not be captured by exemptions. The Chief Inspector of Prisons emphasizes the need for purposeful activities to reduce reoffending and support prisoners’ mental health, highlighting the inadequacy of current prison conditions.
