DENVER – The 9/11 Heroes Run took place at Great Lawn Park in Denver, where participants ran, walked, and rucked (carrying weighted backpacks) to honor the heroes of September 11th and those who have served the nation since. The event, sponsored by the Travis Manion Foundation, is dedicated to First Lieutenant Travis Manion, a Marine who sacrificed his life in 2007 to save his teammates.
Former Marine Matthew Sanchez was among the ruckers, carrying weight as a way to honor those lost in war or to suicide. The event drew participants of all ages, with some wearing full firefighter uniforms and 100-pound bomb suits to simulate the experience of those who responded to the twin towers on 9/11.
The foundation created the event in 2008, and it has since expanded to over 50 cities nationwide, including Denver. The goal is to remember the attacks of 9/11 and the sacrifices made by first responders and the military in the aftermath. The event serves as a way for the community to come together and keep the promise to never forget the impact of 9/11 on the nation and future generations.
Participants shared personal connections to the event, with many coming from military families and feeling a deep sense of gratitude for those who have served and continue to serve the country. The 9/11 Heroes Run serves as a meaningful tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice and a way for the community to show their support and solidarity with first responders and the military.
