Italian authorities are investigating the sinking of the luxury yacht Bayesian, which led to the deaths of seven people, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch. The investigation is focused on determining whether the sinking was due to manslaughter or negligence. The yacht went down off the port of Porticello after an unexpected storm, and seven bodies were recovered over the following days.
The investigation will involve pulling the sunken ship from the sea bottom to further analyze the cause of the sinking. This tragedy has puzzled naval experts, as the yacht should have been able to withstand the storm. Survivors, including the yacht’s captain James Cutfield, have been questioned by authorities about the incident.
The CEO of The Italian Sea Group stated that crew errors, not issues with the boat’s design, led to the sinking. It is speculated that the passengers may have been asleep when the storm hit, making it difficult for them to escape. Most of the bodies were found on the left side of the boat, suggesting that they may have been searching for air pockets as the boat sank.
The disaster could potentially result in lawsuits and criminal charges against the captain, Cutfield, if evidence points to negligence. Italian authorities have not ruled out the possibility of shifting the focus of the investigation to individuals involved in the yacht’s operation.
