The Pikes Peak Outdoor Recreation Alliance recently hosted the State of the Outdoors 2024 event in Colorado Springs, featuring local brands and discussions on recent developments in parks and recreation. Executive Director of Great Outdoors Colorado, Jackie Miller, shared data showing that since 1992, over $1.4 billion from the Colorado Lottery has been invested in more than 5,600 projects across the state. This includes adding 66,000 acres to state parks, constructing or reconstructing over 1,100 miles of trails, protecting 1,000 miles of rivers, and conserving 1.3 million acres of land. On average, around $44 million is invested each year in preserving and enhancing parks, trails, wildlife, rivers, and open space.
These projects have had a significant impact on local areas, with GOCO investing $59 million across 210 grants in El Paso County, conserving more than 8,000 acres of land. Even in Phillips County, which lacks a strong outdoor recreation presence, over $2 million has been invested. This investment is funded by those purchasing lottery tickets, providing a substantial benefit without directly drawing from taxpayers’ wallets.
The influence of GOCO’s funding can be seen through a map provided by the organization, showcasing the various projects happening across the state. While opinions on the lottery may vary, its contributions to outdoor recreation in Colorado are undeniable. This funding ensures that the state’s natural spaces continue to be preserved and improved for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike.
