Colorado coach Deion Sanders and Buffaloes players have announced that they will no longer answer questions from a local columnist, Sean Keeler of the Denver Post. This decision comes after Sanders cut off a question from Keeler during the team’s media day on Aug. 9 and the two had a brief exchange. Colorado officials cited “a series of sustained, personal attacks” as the reason for Keeler’s ban, specifically mentioning the terms he used to describe Sanders.
Keeler, who works as a columnist at the Post and does not cover Colorado full-time, will still be credentialed for events, but will not be allowed to ask questions to the football personnel. A CU spokesman confirmed that the ban is indefinite but did not disclose whether it came at the request of Sanders.
This is not the first time Sanders has banned a reporter from covering his team, as he previously banned a reporter from the Jackson Clarion-Ledger in July 2021. Sanders’ contract allows him to speak only with “mutually agreed upon media,” a provision that is not found in contracts for other coaches at CU.
The ban on Keeler’s questions to Colorado football personnel began on Aug. 12, with CU informing Keeler the following day. The Post editors met with CU officials to request a statement, which was provided on Friday. Despite this ban, Keeler had not violated any media policies, according to a CU sports information official.
The Post does not have a full-time reporter covering Colorado sports, and a Colorado spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
