US announces additional military aid for Ukraine in ongoing conflict with Russia

The White House has announced a new $125m aid package to bolster Ukrainian air defenses in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. President Joe Biden promised that Russia “will not prevail” in the conflict, and that the US will continue to support Ukraine in defending itself. This aid package includes air defense munitions, ammunition, and anti-armor missiles.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked President Biden for the unwavering support from the US during the conflict. Ukrainian forces have faced shortages of crucial supplies in their efforts to expel Russian forces. The latest round of assistance comes as Ukrainian forces continue to battle inside Russia, including a daring cross-border raid into the Russian province of Kursk.

The presence of Ukrainian troops inside Russian territory has been an embarrassing setback for Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has blamed the US for enabling the Ukrainian assaults through the provision of weapons. The US has denied coordinating with Ukraine on these operations. The US government has also announced further economic sanctions targeting Russia to limit its ability to circumvent previous restrictions.

Critics argue that US sanctions have not stopped the Russian government from waging war in Ukraine but have made life more difficult for everyday people in Russia. Despite concerns of escalation, the US continues to provide military assistance to Ukraine to fight back against Russia’s invasion.
