In her speech during the 2024 Democratic National Convention, Vice President Kamala Harris talked about her mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, and her father, Donald Harris. Harris described her mother as an immigrant from India who taught her and her sister to stand up against injustice, while her father, a post-keynesian economist, instilled fearlessness in her at a young age. Despite her parents splitting up when she was young, Harris highlighted her mother’s role in raising her and her sister. Donald Harris, who immigrated to the US from Jamaica, was absent from the convention and has mostly stayed out of his daughter’s political life, with his last public comment in 2019 criticizing her remarks on marijuana use. Harris’s family members, including her husband Doug Emhoff, sister Maya Harris, and various nieces and nephews, attended the convention to show support for her. While Harris’s father was not present, other family members were there to show solidarity and celebrate her historic nomination as the Democratic candidate for president.
