The third day of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago featured vice presidential nominee Tim Walz as the headliner, with support from his former football players. However, uncommitted delegates gathered outside the event to protest the lack of Palestinian-Americans scheduled to speak. The Democratic Party provided a gender-neutral prayer room and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi resumed her speaker duties.
Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign tried to make “Walz Wednesday” happen before Walz’s ceremonial acceptance of the vice presidential nomination. Walz’s former student football players took the stage ahead of his speech, and attendees held signs and big head cutouts of him. Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and Sen. Mark Kelly were seen walking off the convention floor hand in hand.
Democratic officials also set up gender-neutral prayer rugs off the convention floor. The lack of official convention merchandise featuring Harris was noted, as President Joe Biden’s face was featured more prominently. Speculation arose about a potential surprise appearance by Beyonce on the final night of the convention.
Additionally, Rep. Jasmine Crockett made a statement by wearing a T-shirt referencing an exchange with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. Uncommitted delegates staged a sit-in outside the DNC to protest the absence of Palestinian-American speakers, as the DNC reportedly declined their request. Squad members like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rep. Ilhan Omar showed support for the protesters.
