A woman in California included an Apple AirTag in a package she sent to herself to catch thieves who had been stealing her mail. When the package was stolen and the AirTag activated, she alerted the police who were able to locate and arrest the suspects, Virginia Franchessca Lara and Donald Ashton Terry. The suspects were found with the woman’s stolen mail as well as items believed to be stolen from over a dozen additional victims. Lara was arrested for possession of checks with intent to commit fraud, fictitious checks, identity theft, credit card theft, and conspiracy, with a $50,000 bond. Terry was arrested for burglary, possession of checks with intent to commit fraud, credit card theft, identity theft, conspiracy, and several theft-related warrants from Riverside County, with a $460,000 bond. The sheriff’s office commended the woman for her proactive idea and cautioned others to be careful when dealing with theft, encouraging them to contact law enforcement for assistance. The investigation is ongoing, and deputies are reaching out to potential additional victims.
