A group of 50 Republican lawmakers who have served in the military, including supporters of Donald Trump, have accused Democratic vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz of lying about his time in the Army National Guard. The letter, shared with Politico, accuses Walz of misrepresenting his military service, calling on him to “come clean.” Walz has responded by pointing to statements from Democratic military veteran members of Congress defending him.
In response to allegations, Walz’s wife clarified that they had used intrauterine insemination (IUI) to conceive their daughter, not in vitro fertilization (IVF) as previously stated. Walz, a Minnesota governor and VP nominee, has faced criticism from Republican lawmakers, including his opponent in Ohio, JD Vance, for leaving the National Guard in 2005.
The accusations against Walz come as the US job market appears weaker than previously thought, with the Federal Reserve considering a cut to its benchmark interest rate to address inflation. The economy remains a top priority for voters in the upcoming election, with mixed views on President Joe Biden’s handling. Walz’s military record has also come under scrutiny, but there is no evidence to suggest he left the service to avoid wartime deployment. As the Democratic National Convention continues, prominent figures, such as Michelle Obama and Bernie Sanders, have expressed support for the Harris-Walz ticket. Obama delivered a powerful speech, passing the political mantle to Harris and critiquing Trump’s presidency.
