The U.S. Marine Corps Memorial in Golden is celebrating its 47th anniversary amidst recent security upgrades due to vandalism. The memorial, described as sacred ground by Marine Sgt. Paula Sarlls, serves as a place to remember fallen soldiers. After vandals targeted the site with anti-war graffiti, volunteers quickly took action to clean up and find long-term solutions. The nonprofit USMC Memorial Foundation, responsible for maintaining the memorial, is working on installing security cameras and applying a protective coating to prevent future damage. Last year, donations from Denver7 Gives viewers helped replace the aging electrical system that lights the flags at the memorial. While plans for a complete renovation are in the works, they are still years away. A fundraiser for the 47th Anniversary celebration will be held this Saturday, featuring a patriotic concert by Dave Bray USA. A $50 donation is required for entry, with proceeds going towards keeping the flags flying and maintaining the memorial’s sacred space. Sarlls emphasized that the memorial represents the idea that fallen soldiers are not forgotten. Donations to support the memorial can be made online.
