Extreme heat at the Pikes Peak Air Show in Colorado Springs on Saturday led to about 40 or 50 people experiencing heat-related illness, with three being taken to the hospital. The Colorado Springs Fire Department reported that people were being monitored indoors for cooling down. The air show, featuring performances from the Blue Angels and F-22 Raptor, saw historic planes like the B-25J Mitchell and military and civilian aircraft on display. The high temperature and minimal cloud coverage prompted organizers to urge attendees to stay hydrated and provided a free water station. The airshow website also advised attendees to bring hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen due to the exposure to direct sunlight. The only ticket option that offers shade is the upgraded Canteen Experience. The event, scheduled through Sunday, attracted a large audience but the extreme heat led to a significant number of people needing assistance. Fire department personnel were on hand to provide additional resources to those affected by the heat. The situation emphasized the importance of public health and safety measures in such outdoor events, especially during periods of extreme weather conditions.
