The Global Threat of Extreme Heat on Education Progress


As climate change continues to worsen, children around the world are increasingly facing extreme weather hazards that threaten their education and overall well-being. These hazards, including hurricanes, droughts, floods, and wildfires, are becoming more frequent and severe, putting children at risk of disruptions to their schooling and long-term development.

A new report released by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warns that these extreme weather events are undermining global gains in education and exacerbating existing inequalities. The report highlights how children in low-income countries are particularly vulnerable to these hazards, as they often lack access to safe schools, clean water, and adequate healthcare.

According to the report, around 452 million children live in areas at high risk of flooding due to climate change, while over 870 million children live in high-risk areas for drought. These hazards not only disrupt education by forcing schools to close and students to evacuate, but they also have long-term consequences on children’s physical and mental health.

The report calls for urgent action to protect children from the impacts of climate change and ensure their right to education is upheld. This includes investing in climate-resilient infrastructure for schools, improving early warning systems, and providing psychosocial support for children affected by these disasters.

UNICEF emphasizes the need for a coordinated global response to address the challenges faced by children in the wake of extreme weather events. By prioritizing the protection and well-being of children, the international community can work towards ensuring a more sustainable and resilient future for all.
