Palestinian rights organization demands shutdown of alleged ‘Israeli torture camps’ | Conflict in Israel-Palestine intensifies

Recent reports from the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights have revealed horrifying conditions faced by Palestinian detainees in Israeli custody. According to the rights group, prisoners are enduring severe physical and psychological torture, with instances of being exposed naked to the sun, threatened with rape and death, and deprived of basic necessities like food and water.

The Al Mezan Center estimates that 2,650 Palestinians taken from Gaza since October remain in Israeli custody, including children and women. Many are classified as “unlawful combatants” without defined detention periods or specific charges, with some facing trials. The center also highlighted the lack of a definitive record of the total number of Palestinians who have died in Israeli custody.

The findings have raised concerns of a broader pattern of abuse, with some suggesting it may amount to genocide. The United Nations and other rights groups have also condemned the widespread abuse, with reports of sexual assault, waterboarding, and other forms of mistreatment being documented. The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights issued a report detailing the torture faced by Palestinian detainees since the October 7 conflict.

Israeli human rights group B’Tselem similarly presented testimonies detailing acts of severe violence, sexual assault, and deliberate starvation faced by Palestinian detainees. At least 60 Palestinians have reportedly died in Israeli custody since October 7, with calls for the International Criminal Court to investigate the individuals responsible for these crimes.

The Al Mezan Center for Human Rights and other rights groups are urging for greater accountability for the abuses being committed against Palestinian detainees in Israeli custody and for international intervention to address the ongoing atrocities.
