After 901 days of war, the conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues to escalate. In the Kursk region, Ukraine’s armed forces have captured 74 settlements and gained control of 40 square kilometers of territory in the past 24 hours. Russia claims to have halted the Ukrainian troops’ advances and repelled attacks near the border.
US President Joe Biden expressed concern over Ukraine’s military incursion into Russia, calling it a dilemma for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Russian troops are reportedly being moved from Kaliningrad to Kursk, while Russia criticizes Ukraine’s allies for not condemning the attack.
In Ukraine, Russian shelling in the Sumy region resulted in one death and two injuries, with 45 attacks recorded in one day. In Lysychansk, a bus was struck by Ukrainian shelling, killing two and injuring 30. The Ukrainian military reported increased attacks on the Pokrovsk front in eastern Ukraine, with 52 battles in 24 hours.
In terms of diplomacy, Ukraine plans to hold a follow-up conference to the June peace summit in Switzerland, focusing on energy security. Meanwhile, the UN Security Council convened to discuss the conflict, with accusations of hypocrisy and double standards directed at Russia.
As the violence continues to escalate and casualties mount, the situation in Ukraine remains volatile, with no clear end in sight to the conflict that has ravaged the region for over 900 days.
