Tom Daley, who has won five Olympic medals, announces retirement from diving

Five-time Olympic medalist Tom Daley announced his retirement from diving in a recent interview with British Vogue magazine. The 30-year-old British diver made his Olympic debut in Beijing in 2008 and went on to win gold and bronze in Tokyo, silver in Paris, and bronzes in both London 2012 and Rio 2016. Daley, who claimed his fifth Olympic medal in the 10m synchronized event in Paris last month, expressed mixed emotions about ending his competitive diving career, stating, “It feels very, very surreal.” He cited feeling nervous and pressured going into his last Olympics but found solace in seeing his husband, children, and loved ones in the audience, making him realize why he pursued the sport.

Daley’s decision to retire comes after winning gold in Tokyo in 2021 alongside Matty Lee in the 10m synchronized event. Despite initially intending to retire, he returned to defend his title in Paris after being persuaded by his son Robbie. Ultimately, Daley won silver alongside Noah Williams, with China taking the gold. Reflecting on his retirement, Daley acknowledged the significance of making the decision at the right time and expressed gratitude for his diving career’s fulfilling moments. As a highly decorated athlete, Daley leaves behind a legacy of excellence in British diving and a remarkable Olympic career that spans over a decade.
