Man sacrifices his life to save his son from drowning at Willard Bay State Park

A 38-year-old man, Andre Leon Debose, tragically drowned while trying to save his 17-year-old son from drowning at Utah’s Willard Bay State Park. The incident occurred when a 19-year-old woman began to struggle in the water, prompting the son to jump in and help. When the son also started to struggle, Debose jumped in to assist, but unfortunately went under the water and did not resurface. His son was able to make it back to the boat safely. Search and rescue teams recovered Debose’s body later that night. This incident was the second drowning at Willard Bay State Park within a week, prompting authorities to remind parkgoers to exercise caution, wear a life jacket, and be aware of weather conditions. The Utah Division of State Parks extended their condolences to Debose’s family and expressed gratitude to the agencies involved in the search and recovery efforts. The park is located on the eastern side of the Great Salt Lake, about 50 miles north of Salt Lake City. The division emphasized the importance of recreating with a buddy, wearing a life jacket, and informing someone of your location and expected return time while outdoors.
