European Union firefighters to assist in Greece’s firefighting efforts as wildfires rage

Several European countries are sending firefighters and aircraft to help Greece battle a massive wildfire near Athens. The blaze has been burning for three days, fueled by strong winds and high temperatures, causing widespread destruction and forcing thousands to flee. One person has died and at least 66 others have been injured, including two firefighters. Despite some progress in controlling the fire, officials warn that conditions will remain difficult. The National Observatory predicts temperatures of up to 38 degrees Celsius and winds of up to 39 kilometers per hour on Tuesday. At least 10,000 hectares of land have been devastated by the fire, which broke out in the town of Varnavas. Greece has requested international assistance, with firefighters and equipment from France, Italy, the Czech Republic, Romania, Serbia, and Turkey expected to join the efforts. The first casualty has been reported, with a woman’s body found in a burned-out factory in Athens. The situation remains challenging, but with the support of European partners, Greece is working to bring the wildfire under control.
