Aurora City Considers Shifting Non-Felony Domestic Violence Cases to County Courts
Aurora, Colorado, is currently one of the few cities in the state that handles non-felony domestic violence cases in its municipal court. The city is considering transitioning these cases to county courts, citing potential cost savings of around $3 million annually. Councilmember Dustin Zvonek believes that moving these cases to the county level would provide better outcomes for victims, as county courts have more resources and support services.

Karmen Carter, executive director of Gateway Domestic Violence Services, worries that victims could get lost in the process if county courts do not have the necessary resources. There are also logistical challenges such as travel for victims who may have issues like homelessness or lack of childcare.
The proposed transition plan suggests that current domestic violence cases in municipal court will remain there until their conclusion. The Aurora City Council plans to further study the issue, with a potential transition date set for 2025.
While some see the potential benefits of shifting these cases to county courts, others are concerned about the impact on victims and the justice system. With the discussion ongoing, the city will need to carefully consider the implications of this move for all parties involved.
