Campaign for Harris-Walz hires Colorado state staff for presidential race

Vice President Kamala Harris has appointed a team to lead her presidential campaign efforts in Colorado as she faces a race against former President Donald Trump. The team includes individuals with strong ties to Colorado officials, aimed at solidifying the state’s Democratic status. Kayla Calkin will serve as the state director, Sophia Escobedo as the general elections director, Kara Powell as the deputy communications director, and Simon Tafoya as the political and coalitions advisor. Serena Woods, a senior advisor to Gov. Jared Polis, has also joined the team.

Harris won the Democratic nomination ahead of the upcoming Democratic National Convention and announced Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate. Dan Kanninen, the battleground states director, emphasized the choice Colorado voters will face between the Democratic vision for the future and Trump’s agenda. Biden, who dropped out of the race earlier, endorsed Harris as his replacement. In the 2020 election, Biden won Colorado by 13.5 percentage points.

The Trump campaign has not yet revealed its staffing plans for Colorado. Justin Everett was named state director earlier, but his duties were shifted to help with the Republican National Convention. The campaign aims to defeat Democrats in November but has not disclosed specific tactics to the media. Stay informed on Colorado politics by subscribing to the weekly newsletter, The Spot.
