Unidentified man found shot to death in Weld County in 1995 remains a mystery

Nearly 30 years after the discovery of a man found shot to death and buried in a shallow grave in Weld County, Colorado, investigators are still working to identify the victim. The remains were found in a field by an oilfield worker in 1995, and it was determined that the victim was a white or Hispanic male between the ages of 20-25 years. The case has been submitted for genetic genealogy, and authorities are hopeful that this method will lead to a breakthrough in identifying the victim.

Monday marks the 29th anniversary of the discovery of the John Doe, and the Weld County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information on the case to come forward. Detective Byron Kastilahn, who is leading the cold case investigation, can be contacted via email at bkastilahn@weld.gov or by phone at 970-400-2827. Tips can also be submitted to Crimetips@weld.gov or by calling 970-304-6464.

As the investigation continues, authorities are hopeful that new leads will emerge that will shed light on the identity of the victim and bring closure to his loved ones. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of solving cold cases and bringing justice to those who have been victims of violent crimes.
