Study suggests liquid water found on Mars

Scientists have discovered evidence of liquid water on Mars buried several miles beneath the surface, confirming the presence of not just frozen water at the poles but also below the surface. This discovery, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, paves the way for future studies into Mars’ habitability and the search for life beyond Earth. According to the study, the Martian midcrust contains igneous rock with fractures filled with liquid water, potentially enough to fill oceans on the planet’s surface.

The research was conducted using seismic data from NASA’s InSight lander, and scientists used a mathematical model of rock physics to conclude that the seismic data suggested a deep layer of fractured igneous rock saturated with liquid water. However, accessing this water for potential use would be challenging due to the depth at which it is located.

The discovery of liquid water on Mars also raises questions about the possibility of life on the planet, as water is necessary for life as we know it. Some scientists believe that Mars’ underground reservoirs could potentially be harboring some form of life, similar to deep mines and ocean depths on Earth where life thrives. This finding provides important insights into Mars’ climate history and the potential for sustaining life on the planet.
