Officials at UN Security Council advocate for a permanent African seat | United Nations Update

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for reforms to the UN Security Council (UNSC) to give Africa a permanent seat, stating that the continent is underrepresented in a changing world. Guterres emphasized the need for Africa’s views to be valued on peace and security matters globally. The current composition of the UNSC includes five veto-wielding permanent members, with Africa only having three non-permanent seats. In May, the UNSC highlighted the importance of strengthening the role of African countries in addressing global security challenges.

UN General Assembly President Dennis Francis echoed the need for the UN to reflect the current world, with Africa being underrepresented on the UNSC. Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio called for two permanent seats for Africa on the UNSC and demanded the abolition of the veto, or its extension to new permanent members for justice.

Professor Carlos Lopes, a former AU representative, noted that African efforts for better representation are not new, but the current geopolitical landscape makes this moment favorable for change. With a competition for Africa’s votes and the continent’s bloc becoming more difficult to align with one position, Lopes sees a push by Africa to enhance its representation on the UNSC.

In conclusion, the push for reforming the UNSC to give Africa permanent seats reflects a call for more equitable representation in global decision-making and to better address the continent’s security and development challenges. The current international climate presents an opportunity for Africa to advocate for greater recognition and influence within the UN.
