Breton of the EU warns Musk of legal obligations ahead of Trump interview

Elon Musk to Host Live Conversation with Donald Trump on X Platform

Tech billionaire Elon Musk is set to host a live-streamed conversation with US presidential hopeful Donald Trump on his X platform on Monday. However, ahead of this anticipated event, the EU’s internal market chief Thierry Breton has urged Musk to comply with legal obligations under the EU’s digital rulebook.

In a letter published on X, Breton emphasized the importance of implementing measures to mitigate the amplification of harmful content during live streaming events, citing risks to civic discourse and public security if such measures are not put in place. Musk’s acquisition of X in 2022 has put him in the EU’s crosshairs, with the platform now classified as a ‘very large’ online platform under the bloc’s Digital Services Act.

The conversation between Musk and Trump is expected to take place on Trump’s X channel and is scheduled for 08.00 ET on Monday. Trump recently returned to X after his account was restored following Musk’s acquisition of the platform.

Breton’s letter highlights concerns about X’s role in spreading content that could incite violence or public disorder, particularly referencing X’s involvement in recent unrest in the UK. While the UK is no longer in the EU, the executive branch remains vigilant about content that could impact EU citizens.

With tensions between Musk and the EU over compliance with digital regulations and transparency, Breton’s letter serves as a warning of potential consequences for X’s role in spreading harmful content. Monday’s conversation between Musk and Trump will be watched closely as the tech giant navigates these regulatory challenges.
