The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) is contacting people who adopted puppies from a recent adoption event held by Moms and Mutts Colorado (MAMCO) Rescue for Pregnant and Nursing Dogs in Sheridan. This action comes after a puppy adopted at the event tested positive for rabies, leading to concerns about the exposure of other puppies at the event. The 11 puppies from the litter are being asked to be surrendered for euthanasia as a precaution.
Owners Jessica Eden and Keith Bryk, who adopted one of the puppies, expressed their heartbreak over the situation, as they had already grown attached to their puppy. The CDPHE stated that the puppies were too young to be vaccinated against rabies, which led to the decision to euthanize the entire litter due to potential exposure.
Aron Jones, the director of MAMCO, described the puppies’ health and the efforts made to protect both adopters and dogs during the adoption event. Despite the careful precautions taken, the tragic outcome has left both the rescue staff and the adopters devastated.
Eden and Bryk expressed gratitude for the support from MAMCO, but the loss of their puppy has been a difficult experience for them. They emphasized the strong bond they had formed with the puppy in the short time they had together. This incident highlights the complex challenges faced in situations involving potential rabies exposure and the impact it can have on both animals and their owners.
