Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh dies in Iranian raid

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in a raid at his residence in Tehran, following his attendance at the inauguration of the new Iranian president. The Palestinian military group Hamas and the Iranian Revolutionary Guards confirmed his death, with the cause still under investigation. Haniyeh, known for his tough rhetoric and international relations work for Hamas, had been the group’s top leader in Gaza since 2017. While it is unclear who was responsible for the raid, Hamas blamed Israel for the killing, although the Israeli Defense Forces declined to comment. Haniyeh’s death adds to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, which has been escalating for nearly a year since Hamas attacked Israel. The Israel Defense Forces recently claimed responsibility for an airstrike in Beirut, Lebanon, targeting a senior Hezbollah commander responsible for a deadly rocket attack in the Golan Heights. The situation remains tense and uncertain as the conflict between Israel and Palestinian factions, as well as other regional actors, continues to play out.
