Autopsy Reveals Matthew Perry’s Cause of Death as ‘Acute Effects of Ketamine’

Matthew Perry, famous for his role as Chandler Bing on the popular television show “Friends,” passed away at the age of 54 from the acute effects of ketamine according to the Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office. Perry was found unresponsive in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home on October 28. The autopsy report cites drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of an opioid, buprenorphine, as contributing factors to his death but the primary cause was the acute effects of ketamine.

Ketamine is a potent anesthetic that has gained popularity as an alternative therapy for mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. Perry was reportedly on ketamine infusion therapy, but the levels found in his postmortem blood were extremely high. According to the autopsy report, the main lethal effects of the ketamine would have been from cardiovascular overstimulation and respiratory depression. The report also found therapeutic levels of buprenorphine, used for pain and drug addiction treatment, and evidence of sedatives in his system. No evidence of alcohol, methamphetamine, or cocaine was found.

Perry had been open about his struggles with drug and alcohol addiction, seeking treatment and rehab facilities for many years. In his memoir, “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing,” he shared details of the health issues he faced, including a series of medical episodes in 2018 that included pneumonia, an exploded colon, and multiple surgeries.

He achieved widespread fame as Chandler Bing on “Friends,” and following the show’s success, he starred in several movies. After his passing, tributes poured in from fans and colleagues, with the rest of the “Friends” cast expressing devastation at the loss of a beloved member. A private funeral for Perry was held on November 3, with the “Friends” cast referring to themselves as a family in a joint statement.

Matthew Perry’s sudden passing has once again brought to light the dangers of substance abuse and the importance of mental health awareness. He leaves behind a legacy of acting talent, but also a personal struggle that has deeply impacted those close to him and his legions of fans.
